The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has announced its support for the Moore Street Master Plan, as proposed by the Moore Street Preservation Trust, following a meeting between the ICTU National Executive and the Trust.
Commenting, Congress General Secretary Owen Reidy said:
"The 1916 Rising and the Irish trade union movement are tightly interwoven. Many of the men and women who fought that week came from the labour movement, and Moore Street is where that shared history reached a defining moment. It is for that reason that the Irish Congress of Trade Unions is proud to support the Moore Street Preservation Trust.
"The sustained neglect of Moore Street over many decades is unacceptable. While other cities have found ways to honour and regenerate sites of comparable historical significance, we have allowed one of the most important streets in modern Irish history to fall into disrepair. That has to end.
"The Moore Street Preservation Trust has produced a credible, and exciting plan. Congress is committing our full support to it. The Master Plan is an opportunity to correct decades of institutional neglect, to honour what happened there in 1916, and to build a better future for the surrounding community.
"The links between 1916 and the labour movement are deep and well-documented. We intend to be active stakeholders in this process, and we will be making that case clearly to Government and to Dublin City Council. Moore Street deserves a plan equal to its significance, and we believe that the Preservation Trust has provided one."
